But it has also been well-known to violinists since David Oistrakh\, a friend of the composer\, requested a transcription for his instrument. Captivated by the sonata’s beauty\, he convinced Prokofiev to adapt it for violin: a new version was released in 1944\, with a few adjustments but without losing any of its original spirit. \nCésar Franck’s Sonata in A major (1886)\, a must-have for violinists\, has had the opposite fate. Although not transcribed by the composer\, it was nevertheless enthusiastically adopted by flautists\, captivated by its lyrical line and harmonic richness. Today it has fully entered the flute repertoire. \nAs an interlude\, the first movement of Robert Schumann’s Fairy Tales\, originally written for viola and piano\, also finds new meaning in this flute version.
